Jana Wins the Chicken Jam Battle and Kelly Wins the TTR War

Jana Mayen-Wetherby won the Roxy Chicken Jam in bright California sunshine this past Monday. Meanwhile, a victory in Saturdayâ's pipe competition and a 21st place in slopestyle where enough to secure the overall Ticket to Ride title for Kelly Clark. The contest was not a gimme either as some of the finest female riders on the planet showed up for the slopestyle event. Both legendary rippers and younger ones as well did battle for the top three spots although battle may not be the operative word. While all the girls want to win, there is also camaraderie amongst them and they all cheer for each other, giving a good vibe to the event. The course was small to medium sized and fun. The less than huge course meant that getting tech and being consistent helped with the win. For instance, instead of going for the straight up spin to win moves, like a 900, moves like switch back 5’s, cab7’s and rodeos helped the podium winners get there. Not too mention the few rail and jib hits. Just because they were not throwing 1280’s don’t think the girls were not putting it on the line, they were. Think it was Sarka (according to Pat Bridges Sarka ruled at the best contest ever, the World Quarter contest just a week prior and the Boneyard) who was trying a 900, hooked an edge, landed on her head and tumbled down the landing and gave everyone a real scare in the minutes it took her to sit up and get carted off the course by ski patrol. That was about the only negative of the event. After some flawless weather on Friday and Saturday, Sunday saw very windy conditions. Although everyone had places to go the powers at be decided postpone the event until Monday. It turned out to be a good move because Monday was again flawless, unless you forgot sunscreen because there was not a cloud in the sky and little or no wind. Thirty eight or so women got two runs to make it into the 12 person finals. Jana’s first run of three in the finals pretty much did it for her. There were several girls nipping at her heels; Cheryl Maas or Tara Dakides possibly could have done it had they gotten their runs a little more solid. Any of the top 5 could have taken it too but Jana stomped it, a veteran of years of competitions, she seems to gets better with age. So if you take the good weather, good action, great riders, free bands and good vibes, you had a great time. Thanks to Quiksilver/Roxy, Rockstar, Mammoth and all the sponsors for keeping the event going during tough economic times! The Chicken Jam was a 6 star TTR event and the women’s overall title was also determined there. Going into the event Jamie Anderson was in the lead for the title, with Lisa Wiik in second maybe and Kelly Clark in third? Unfortunately Jamie Anderson supposedly ruptured her spleen at the US Open and could not make it. Hope Jamie recovers quickly by the way! Kelly Clark managed to win the pipe comp and placed well enough in slopestyle to get enough points for the overall. Kelly Clark is definitely deserving of the award, she is a strong competitor and role model. Lisa Wiik got second overall and Jamie Anderson got bumped into third.

Jana Meyen-Wetherby

Jana pretty much crushed the Chicken Jam and she had some STIFF competition from many of the best female riders in the world. Here is Janna on the last feature of the course, the Zumiez wallride, on which she is doing a front blunt to fakie

2009 Roxy Chicken Jam course overview

An overview of the fun course; starting with a hip, into a section with a choice of a flat/down bar or a box, into a series of three jumps (the third jump had an option of the triple barrel) and finally into the bottom section which had a choice of the Zumiez wall or a box thing on top of some transition

Isabelle Lalive

Isabelle Lalive came from Colorado, arrived at 4 am for practice day, practiced all day hard. She spent a lot of time on the hill. Well, the dedication paid off as she got 4th place. Actually, it did not literally pay off because she won no money but she won coverage and respect from a ton of new people – frontside air off the hip

04roxy

The slope contest was scheduled for Sunday BUT there were wind gusts up to 100 mph off the Sierra Crest Ridgetops and steady winds of 30-50 mph so thankfully the contest was put off until Monday

Monday morning was beautiful and not a cloud in the sky. Legendary rider Tara Dakides brings you the trick that turned women’s snowboarding upside down years ago, the backflip

maas back 7

Cheryl Maas with a back 7, she was making 7’s in practice but kind of butt checked em in the finals, which probably slid her back to 8th place, otherwise she surely would have placed higher

celia miller

chanelle sladics 5

Chanelle Sladics finished in the top 5. These past few years, she has gotten her share of top 5’s and podium finishes. Chanelle threw a dance party the night after the finals. That’s the difference between the girl and guy snowboarder. The girls throw a dance party, which every one wants to be at. The guys would probably get drunk, smoke cigarettes and break stuff all night and wonder where the girls are. Ok, maybe not everyone would want to be at a dance party with the best and hottest girl snowboarders in the world but most people would

Jana Mayen-Wetherby was the only woman gapping the flat/down bar – badass

izzy underflip 5

Isabelle Lalive with an underflip 5. Izzy is super nice and always has a smile on her face. Hell, all the girls were super nice which definitely added to the positive vibes

leanne pelosi Leanne Pelosi, just another of one of the best riders in the world lisawiik back5

Lisa Wiik back 5’s the last booter. Lisa got 3rd for the day and 2nd over all for the TTR tour

spencerobrien Spencer O’Brien has been on a tear this year and gotten lot’s of prize checks but not in Mammoth

taniadetomas

Tania Detomas from Italy was crushing the main park at Mammoth tara

Pretty much all the girls at the event owe some thanks to this woman, Tara Dakides, for breaking boundaries in women’s snowboarding and pushing the sport forward. Tara was the only girl hitting the triple barrel obstacle in the finals

Kelly Clark is the 2008/2009 TTR champion. Hell, we might as well call her 2010 Olympic Pipe champ, at least if she dominates like she did this year

kelly clark roxy chicken jam

Kelly is not known for jumps but here she proves she can ride anything, which certainly is the case when you grow up riding the east coast like she did

jennyjones_front5

Jenny Jones, let me guess, another super nice girl – frontside 5 anytime, second place and $7,000 is what she gets to bring back to England jana cab 7 Jana's winning run consisted of a Japan air off the hip, air to 50/50 on the down/flat rail, back 5 stale, cab 7 (Todd Richards wants to point out it was off the toes), cab 5 mute and a front blunt to fakie on the Zumiez wall

Jana seemed genuinely honored to have won and beaten such an elite group of girls

Lisa Wiik, Kelly Clark and Chanelle Sladics

Ticket To Ride Podium, l-r, Lisa Wiik, Kelly Clark, Chanelle Sladics, Kjersti TTR award presenter having fun. Chanelle was there to accept the award for Jamie Anderson who ruptured her spleen on the Vermont ice at the US Open. Kjersti was up there to get Lisa to guzzle the balance of her bottle of Champagne, which Lisa did. That puts the end to a super fun contest, a good women’s TTR year and it marks the beginning to likely a very fun night for some, the beginning of a 6 hour drive south for others and the beginning of Ms Superpark at June for some of the girls Results 1 Jana Mayen-Wetherby $15,000 2 Jenny Jones $7,000 3 Lisa Wiik $3,000 4 Isabelle Lalive 5 Chanelle Sladics 6 Raewyn Reid 7 Silvia Mittermueller 8 Cheryl Maas 9 Tara Dakides 10 Hana Beaman Zumiez Wall Best Trick Jana Weatherby (Mayen) $1,500 Ticket to Ride Overall 1 Kelly Clark $50,000 2 Lisa Wiik $25,000 3 Jamie Anderson $15,000 4 Cheryl Maas 5 Kjersti Ostgaard Buass
