Pre-season snowboard contests in parking lots, away from real snow are super fun but thankfully the real snow season has begun! The first Volcom Peanut Butter and Railjam went down at Mammoth Mountain this past weekend on real snow. The PBRJ is an amateur/entry level pro rail contest. The series runs all over the US of A and Canada with the final event in the spring. The format is simple; three rails side by side, 20 minute jams, four different classes. There are the 15 and under groms, 16 and over ams, ladies and the open/pro class. The top 5 from each class got an invite to the finals and the top three open riders got a little money and lots of love from the crowds.
Mammoth had received its first major snowfall of the season just prior to the weekend so everyone had fun; contestants and crowd alike. The obstacles consisted of a lift tower, shark fin and down rail. According to local pro/hero Matt Moriarity all three obstacles where fun “It’s good, there is usually at least one obstacle I don’t like but they are all fun this year; the down rail is best”
In the Transworld Snowboarding Dirty Dozen Issue Mason Aguirre says it is an honor to see all the amazing stuff he does while being a pro snowboarder. Mason is correct and events like the PBRJ provide the future doer’s of amazing feats. Since these guys and gals are up and comers and the announcer called out bib numbers and not names I did not know who all the rippers were and I apologize for any mis-spellings and mislabeling. If anyone wants to correct me, email dirtrag@sprynet.com
- Back 360 out in the 16 and over division

- Another unidentified rider in the 16 and over division gets steezy
- Wade Gody 360’s off the Shark fin. Wade got 3rd in the 16 and over division; this is not even the open class
- Andrew Mackenzie with a super stylin’ backlip to crail

View from the top. The day started sunny and beautiful but the weather got a little nasty for the finals

- Tyler Flanagan makes a slight adjustment to the down rail before the start of the open class qualifiers
- Top 5 female finisher Micki Slechta front boards the down rail

- Second place female finisher Michelle Shaw
- Unknown to a back 180 out off the shark fin
- Tyler 270’s on
They don’t call it the Peanut Butter and rail jam for nothing – free PB & J’s, cheese puff’s, cookies, and soda – all the good food a growing body needs

Oren Tanzer is the man behind the Mammoth park and the one who helped make the PBRJ at Mammoth possible. Everyone liked the obstacle – here’s why, well Oren and his crew

- First pro snowboarder Shaun White makes the switch to skateboarding. Well 2007 X games skateboarding medalist Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins is making the transition to snowboarding. Lyn-Z actually lives in Mammoth. She rips the skate park and she made the finals of the PBRJ ladies rail jam

- Bryn Valaika gets shifty on her way to 4th place
- Mammoth Local Javier Silva got third place in the open division. He was ripping solid and he was stoked on his 150 dollar third place money. He said the money was going towards rent. Go visit at the Pita Pit while in Mammoth, tip big too
- Second place open winner Jared Dawond. He got second and he works at 5 Boroughs pizza, again, tip big until he gets a full sponsorship

- Local hero Matt Moriarity. Matt could have won but he spent a lot of time working on really hard combos. Look for a sequence of him later on this week
- Greg Bretz seriously should have won. For some reason he did not even top 5
- Waiting for the awards
- Welcome to the future, Trevor Jacobs won the 15 and under division
Just because it appeared Greg Bretz should have one does not mean Johnny Lazz did not rip. His hardside back 180 out was sick. Johnny Lazz won the open class, congrats Johhny!
