The fourth annual Abominable Snow Jam is now officially underway. It started off strong on day one with a two-story quarter pipe located just above the High Cascade Snowboard Camp halfpipe. There was an intense morning wind, about ten thousand butterflies on course and an amazing view of the Northwest Mountains. This was the setting for two hour long sessions, with some of the worlds best quarterpipe riders.
The riders didn’t hesitate to let loose on this monstrous wall of transition. There were some serious tricks that were thrown down and they were well above the lip. Jake Blauvelt destroyed it all day, he let the quarterpipe have his big bag of tricks. Peter Line was delivering monster airs that were landed perfect on the tranny. Lonnie Kauk and Sammy Luebke were tweaking their grabs beyond understanding. Pat Moore did a sick Mctwist japan to fakie. Mason Aguirre stomped a serious frontside alley oop 1080 but he did it with his frends around. Scotty Lago blasted an alley oop seven truck driver that was awarded best trick, and Kevin Pearce stuck a solid array of tricks throughout the session that landed him in second place. Torstein Horgmo had a huge day, not only because he won the event and took home $10,000. More so because he spent his time at least 15 feet above the lip on each hit. All of the men killed it, I even saw Pat Bridges hand planting the monster.
The women’s session took place along with the men. Some of the girls were pretty serious about stepping up female QP riding to a new level. Gretchen Bleiler had a handful of backside nine attempts that looked badass. Hanah Beaman stomped a sick Mctwist that landed her in first place and made her $5,000 richer.
The quarterpipe session was intense and it gave us a little taste of what we can expect tomorrow. Day two will feature the halfpipe event and should bring for some more large altitude and even more tricks.
