Explain to us a daily routine for you in Jackson Hole in the winter?
My days depend on a few factors, such as if I'm going riding for fun,or if I am working on a film project / shooting photo's. Regardless I pretty much wake up early check to see how much snow fell, read avalanche / weather forecast and make a plan based on the information. This information dictates where and what to go ride. If there's a lot of new snow hit the ski resort if no new snow, I'll venture out into the backcountry on foot or by snowmobile. I usually have a good idea of what I'm doing the day before, I like to have aplan and a back up plan, so I don't miss any good riding.
Top six powder days you have ever had When? Why?
This is tough, It seems like a good day of riding is always "the best day ever" in the moment. I think I had a few this year though. During the Natural Selection Event we received eight feet of snow in a week. I was able to share my home mountains and favorite runs at it's best. It was more of a freeriding trip for the riders than a contest. Other fine days include a few non-specific days riding in the Wyoming Backcountry, Alaska, New Zealand, and Canada.
You have traveled the world several times as a True Californian why did you decide to settle down in Jackson Hole Wyoming?
I first went to Jackson when I was in high school and it had a profound effect on me. I got a intense feeling of freedom and endless possibilities, it's kinda hard to explain but it always lingered in the back of my mind until I decided to move there for a season. Once I was here it just felt like home, it was a small town with a surrounded by mountains with endless riding to explore. That season I started accessing the backcountry around Jackson with a snowmobile and found all these super good spots with no one around.
- Earning his turns...
What happend with Burton?
Once you grow up they kick you out of the "Boy Band".
What is the new project with Volcom making snowboards?
It's the evolution of the brand. They've been a big part of snowboarding since the company was founded and is the last level of tribute to the sport.
Will you have your own pro model?
I don't know.
Volcom is a huge company now but still like feels a family because the team loves the brand and nobody leaves? Why do you think it is like that?
Because they are true to the sport and people.
You are a great surfer, where and how many days do you still surf per year?
I grew up surfing year round and then I moved to the mountains when I was 18. I moved back to the coast after every winter for years then finally got sick of it. These days I live in the mountains year round and I don't surf as much as I'd like to. I get a few days a year in California when I visit friends or family but do at least one big surf trip in the fall, about 5-6 weeks in Indonesia, Bali mostly.
- Getting barreled in the summer
Is it true that you are the one who discovered TRICE way before he went to the Superpark and made history?
He was destine to make his mark on the sport and I just did what ever I could to help along the way. He was a young talented rider still in high school when I met him and had a lot of potential. He was the first rider I've met since Terje that just totally blew me away the first time I saw them ride, like the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I got goose bumps and shit.
How do you feel about the snowboard industry?
I feel grateful to still have support after all these years. It's has become very diverse, it's hard to really keep track of what's going on.. I'm kinda lost in all the different trends so I just focus on my riding style.
We saw you in Escramble, the last Volcom movie making sushi. Do you own a sushi place?
I don't own the restaraunt... but I am a chef. I really enjoy the job and the education.
Favorite people to shred with?
My friends near and far...
Favorite people to surf with?
The same
You skate? How often?
As much as I can. I got really beat up riding this winter and skating hurts a little more these days, so I try to keep it balanced.
- Skating in Japan
What do you see for the future of snowboarding?
Progression, It will always move forward.. trends will be recycled... pant's will get baggy then tight again and back.. who knows... who cares. I do hope to see more events like the Natural Selection, more
freeride freestyle events at locations with good terrain and good snow. I believe this will inspire the next generation get back to the roots the of the sport, riding and exploring the mountains, finding new spots and developing individual style.
Top six snowboarders of all the time?
Craig Kelly, Terje, Jamie Lynn, Gigi Ruff , Nicolas Muller, Travis Rice
How is to be part of the Trice movie project?
It's an honor. I've watched some of the footage and it's the craziest shit I've ever seen. The riding is next level.
Do you miss California?
Yes, I have very good memories from growing up there and a lot of friends.
Pros and cons to living in Ca?
Pro's > It has everything / Con's > overpopulated.
Pros and cons to living in Wyoming?
Pro's > Endless Mountains / Con's > no ocean, and it's become expensive, we'll just in Jackson I guess.
Do you have any thing special you eat or a diet?
Not really, but I try to eat healthy and I like to try new types of food when ever possible.
Do you eat fast food?
Rarely.
Do you follow any type of work out routine?
I just try and stay active. I guess I have a stretching routine.
Plans for the next season?
Work on becoming a mountain guide, Ride and shoot.
You are a living legend of snowboarding do people ask for autographs?
Sometimes, it's pretty random though.
You still ride park?
Not really, but the mini parks are fun.
