Five Minutes with | Joe Sexton
By: Anthony Cappetta
I stopped into Cal Surf about a week ago to check out the remodel of the upstairs and I left with a task, to interview one of the team riders for this blog. After a little procrastinating I jumped on a antique mission with Cal Surf team members Joe Sexton and John Hodge as well as Newsroom Cinema editor Riley Erickson. It was a beautiful day and clustered all in one Minnesota town is about fifteen crazy antique shops. We dug deep into the pits of dust and dirt; through 1940’s Coke memorabilia, cases of sterling silver jewelry and multiple floors of trinkets and knick-knacks. The day was capped off by a smooth 1950’s lunch and interview with Joe Sexton at Lily’s Grill and Malt Shop.
Anthony: I lost you for a while there, what all did you buy?
Joe: I almost got a Harley Davidson bicycle that looked like a motorcycle but instead I bought a pair of 1920’s John Lennon Sunglasses. I was looking for a pair of regular eyeglasses.
(John Hodge chimes in with a quote from Liar Liar)
Anthony: What are you looking forward to most about the off-season?
Joe: I am getting knee surgery tomorrow so really focusing on rehab, fishing and friends.
Anthony: Lets get an explanation of your kit.
Joe: Backwards Altamont Navy mesh hat, Red Altamont button up, white belt, RVCA jeans, bull dog green socks, Etnies slip ons.
Anthony: Where are you pulling most of your inspiration these days?
Joe: Thrift Stores, John Hodge, Music and the past.
Anthony: Why did you switch to vanilla coke from cherry coke for your refill?
Joe: I tried Riley’s and it was good.
Anthony: What goals do you have for the future?
Joe: That’s a serial question… keep having fun snowboarding and take more photos.
Anthony: Coolest place you have traveled and why?
Joe: Japan, it was culture shock(Joe shoots straw wrapper at my face, I return fire and it goes on the next table… awkward)

Anthony: What was a highlight from this season?
Joe: The new people I got to snowboard with and going to snowboard paradise, Quebec.
Anthony: What is the Number one place that is going to be blown out from this year?
Joe: Quebec.
Anthony: Baker or Deathwish
Joe: That’s hard (Hodge, Riley and Joe go off for 10 mins talking about different skateboarders trying to figure out the answer)
It’s too early to tell.
Anthony: Who do you think is coming up in snowboarding?
Joe: There is a lot, Will Tuddenham, a lot of MN kids, Jake [Olson-Elm], John Hodge. A lot of the Transworld video people.
Anthony: Which video are you looking forward to the most?
Joe: And Now, Extremely Sorry, Stay Gold, Mind Field and all of the snowboard movies.

Anthony: I should have asked earlier but what were you looking to find at the antique stores?
Joe: Old eyeglasses that I can put my prescription in, jewelry, trinkets, old stuff.
(Joe laughs antique style, and Riley starts asking some questions)
Riley: Johnny Cash or Elvis?
Joe: Elvis
Riley: why did you go with coke instead of a Malt?
Joe: because fries were extra and I didn’t know how big the burger was. The malt was expensive and they have flavored Coke.
Riley: If you bought a bull dog tomorrow what would you name it?
Joe: Oscar
(Hodge Quotes another Movie)
