Mammoth WCI Rail Jam 2008 Photos: Andrew Miller Words: Johnny Centi Video: Mark Dangler
Andrew
Miller and Mark Dangler of the Snowboard Revolution Crew rolled up at
6:30pm to set up in time for the 8:15 rail jam. By the time Lonnie,
Billy and I arrived at the Village the rail jam had already started.
The riders were shredding right away and the announcers Dingo and Pat
Bridges were getting the crowd pumped up. Thanks for the shout out
guys. I walked into the crowd with two Snowrev signs and one Injured
Riders Foundation Sign. I found the Snowboard Rev street crew, passed
on the signs to them and they began representing. Then I moved inside
the fence with a bag full of stickers and passed out about 400 to the
spectators in the front rows. The kids and the Japanese girls loved
them. Mammoth Mountain assembled a 30-foot down flat down scaffolding with three jibs on it. The set up consisted of a fifteen-foot flat bar on the left; a flat box with two creeper rails on each side and a mellow 20-foot kinked rail on the right. The Mammoth park staff used 2 truckloads of snow they collected from the mountain. 12 of the park staff crew and worked ten and a half hours on Saturday getting this set up and taking it down.
The Snowboarders were competing in the rider judged rail jam for $10,000; winner takes all. The riders/judges included Greg Bretz, James Shoshone, Cameron Pierce, Niko Cioffi, Sage Kotsenburg, Blaze Kotsenburg, Chas Guldemond, Chris Grenier, Sam Hulbert, Brandon Reis, Tevor Jacobs, Logan Short, Darrell Mathes, Jared Dawoud, Torstein Horgmo, Dan Breise, Scott Vine and more.
The Riding highlights included Trevor Jacobs backside 50-50 from the middle box and gap to the kink rail 50-50 180 out of the down flat down kink. Chas Guldemond was on fire and stomped some of the most creative stuff all night. He did a backside 270 gap onto the down of the kink rail and a backside 270 from lip of the middle box to down bar rail. Greg Bretz definitely killed it all night and stuck a front side 50-50 to 270 to front board on the kink rail. Brandon Reis and Sam Hulbert threw down the most technical tricks of the night. Darrell Mathes rode smooth and stomped textbook back lips on the down bar and through the kink
