Snowboarder Magazine Superpark 13 Mammoth Mountain
Snowboarder Magazine Superpark 13: Mammoth WordsJoe Carter VideoMark DanglerPhotos Andrew Miller, Tyler Heffernan, Kevin Westenbarger
Bring out the big boards, wax em up, and remember your sunscreen because it's a long week at Mammoth for the thirteenth annual Superpark hosted by Snowboarder Magazine and Gatorade. A shitload of the worlds best snowboarders from all over the globe that have been hand picked by team managers, and the one and only Pat "The Eye" Bridges. For the second year in a row Mammoth Mountain was the host, but unlike last year they moved the venue to the opposite side of the mountain. Putting it over at Chair 4, or better known as South Park, giving riders the chance to take a lot more laps on the four minute high speed chair from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Riders were flying all over the place on the jumps and other features that have as much vertical as many small east coast resorts. The weather the whole week before didn't seem like the rain and wind would ever stop. With one weather delay starting the whole thing a day later, it was ready to go off. Clouds finally broke and the wind died down enough. Cat drivers and park staff were slaving away before the riders came to build some monster booters, hips, a really fun BMX style course, and plenty more. Bear Mountain, New Hampshire's Loon Mountain, and of course Mammoth were the three mountains that came to make some interesting stuff. The largest feature of them all was probably the Loon jump. A massive 20 foot cheese wedge that sent you over 100' feet to the sweet spot. Right off the bat Chelone Miller guinea pigged it. Landing all good then sent a huge backside rodeo far down the landing before other riders even started to hit it. Right behind him was Lonnie Kauk taking hot laps all day together and riding this behemoth like it was just another day riding main park. It was Jonas Carlson that probably had the most stylish move on it the first day poking the hell out of a backside 720 indy deeeeeeeeeep down the landing. As he got back to the top he was telling me with an exciting shit eating grin "That's the most airtime I've ever had in my life." Other riders like Matts Kulisek, Madison Elsworth, Brandon Cocard, Dustin Craven, Wyatt Caldwell and of course Pat Moore also gave it a go, and survived another day. Another one of the other massive features that had a gnarly session go down on was the huge hip that took Mammoth's Pete Columbo about 2 full days in a cat to construct. Jake Welch was starting higher than everyone else with no speed checks blasting the highest airs way above the Sierra Mountain skyline. Pat Moore wasn't too far behind him after riding the Loon jump all day before. Some of the other guys killing it were Jared Hadi, Austin Sweetin, Aaron Biitner Colin Langlois, Shayne Pospisil, Greg Bokenkamp, Nate Farrell and many more. Even more impressive was Jenny Jones not only hanging with the guys but sending huge airs way up there and seemed to stomp, even if she landed low on the tranny. If you happened to stay up there late every day you got the treat of watching Austin Hironaka tweaking the hell out of his board and putting down backside rodeos along side of Tim Humphries going huge and doing some stylish air to fakies. It doesn't end there one bit. With Gatorade playing a big part this year on the last day there was a blood red pond skim that Haldor Helgason was the only victim going down behind his buddy and probably breaking any electronics that might have been in his pockets. The laugh was well worth it.
The list of highlights keeps going but to get an idea make sure you check out all the photos and video from this years Superpark. Big thanks to all the staff, riders, Oren Tanzer, cat drivers, and everyone else that helped put on another amazing event bringing everyone together for a huge reunion in the snowboarding world. Especially Pat Bridges and the rest of the Snowboarder Magazine staff for letting us at SNOWREV come and ride and give all of you reading this another glimpse at all the action. The one downside of an event like this with massive features is the risk of riders getting broke off. A good friend to all of us here Cody Rosenthal needs some help after breaking his back at Superpark. Cody has no heath insurance and under went a lifelight to Reno and back surgery so you know bill is going to be hefty. If anyone out there is willing to help him getting back on his feet a paypal fund has been set upHEREfor donationto Cody's medical bills. We wish you the best recover Cody! Stay up!
