Shaun McKay Interview

MT: Why do you choose to call Baker your home resort?
All of the above. Baker is the shit. So much fun to ride. Really challenging terrain, and lots of snow. The people up there are awesome as well, everyone is super good at riding pow, and all have a good time. Bellingham is also the closest you can get to Canada while still being in a cool city.

MT: You live between Oceanside, CA, the road and Baker right? Do you travel with your wife?
That is right. Usually my wife stays home and goes to School in California all winter, and takes care of Lola, our cat. This winter she actually gets to move up to Bellingham with me. She has a clinical internship  at a Physical Therapy office up there and will be there all winter. Stoked on that. This will be the first winter we spend together in 10 years.

MT: How hard is to have a long distance relationship?
It is a little hard, but I have an awesome wife. It all boils down to trust, and we both trust each other. In the winter we miss each other, but the time we spend apart, make the times together better.

MT: Who rocks your ipod?
All sorts of shiz. Lately it has been a lot of Kanye, Ghost Face, Radio Head. But I have all sorts in there.

MT: Is it hard to get the torch of the northwest proud after riders like PETER LINE, JAMIE LYNN, MIKE RANQUET, OR TODD Schlosser?
Heck Yeah. I grew up seeing those guys in the video's and just thought that they were god's. The Northwest has some crazy heritage. I am defiantly proud to be from there and happy I grew up riding in those conditions. The terrain is awesome, and the Mt. are all really good. For a long time the northwest stopped producing Pro Shreds, but lately I think it is back on the map, with help from guys like Patrick McCarthy, Jesse Burtner and Mark Landvik leading the way.

PM: You have been dating your wonderful girlfriend and now wife, Kelly, for 10 years. That's a long time for someone as young as you. When did you two start dating? High School?
That is correct, High School Sweet Hearts. I was a Junior and she was a Senior when we started dating. We actually met through one of her friends I was dating. We were best friends for a couple of years before we actually  started dating, and we just got married in August of 2008.

MT: Is Matt Cummings Heavy Metal? Do you ever shred with him or Barret Christy?
I never really see Matt up there, or at least dont recognize him,  but Temple is up there all the time. You see him riding Baker every day there is pow. I never really ride with him, he is kind of a quiet dude, and is usually riding with just one other person. I did take some runs with Ranquet last year. That was awesome. He was riding a board with no tail, all nose, and no backs on his bindings and no beanie. He was totally charging. It was rad.

MT: How often do you surf? do you also skate?
I surf all the time in the summer, or at least when ever there are waves. I don't really ever skate any more. Skate boarding is way to hard, and I always get broke off.

MT: What is the % of fake people in the industry?
That is a tough one. I think everyone is full of shit in there own special way. Even the most real people have there flaws!

MT: Do you follow any type of work out routine?
I never really did until I had to go through  Rehab after a shoulder surgery. Now I try to take it pretty serious in the off season, just to keep everything strong. In the winter all I really can manage to do is stretch. Stretching is super important.

MT; Are you on diet?
Not really. I dont eat any thing with four legs. I try to eat lots of fruits and veggies, but I have a sweet tooth that can get a little out of hand.

MT: WHAT EVER COMES TO MIND
WILLE LUOMA? King of the Disco. Fun to party with. I think I am filming with him this year also. Cant wait. He is a bad ass
ANNIE FAST? Queen of the Rouge Wave. Also fun to party with. Good at Badminton.
HILL STREET? Good eats, good people
BURTON? Bully's. Killing the Independent movie production. Maybe not killing, but definitely altering
BARRELS?Yes Please
KFC?Horrible for you, but taste great. Who doesn't love fried chicken?
GOD?Oh, thats a tuff one. Yes and No. Religion? Not so much
BAKER ROAD GAP?Bin dar don dat
JULIO IGLESIAS?Wholio?
YOGA?Never tried it. Sounds awesome

PM: Not too many people probably know that you film part of the PEOPLE movies. You even film shots of yourself in your part, and your always buying the new camera gear, lenses, etc.. Actually, come to think of it, you know more than me about camera stuff and computer stuff. I would have to say you are the go to guy on any kind of computer/camera problem for us. You even edit a ton of the bonus parts on the DVD. How come your the only person on the crew who takes any interest in this stuff?
That is a very long question. In short, I dont know why no body else takes interests in that stuff. From a young age, I have always been in to all thing electronic, game-boys, walk-mans, nintendeo's. My Family always had video  cameras, so I guess I just grew up with that stuff.

PM: You should tell some of the other guys like Austin Smith and Curtis Ciszek to start filming themselves. Just cruise up into the backcountry, build the jump, set up a camera on a tripod and press the red button.  It would really help our budget out. Think they would be down?
Probably not. I don't think any one else wants to carry that shit around the backcountry with them.

MT: Do you have plans to have a family?
Not really plans, but I could see it happening some day down the road.

MT: Future plans?
Snowboard as long as I am progressing, or until I film a part I am happy with. Get a boat. Find some tasty waves, sail off in to the sunset

MT: Any thanks?
My wife Kelly. Many thanks to all my sponsors. K2, 686, Dragon, Defcon, Active, Airblaster.  All of my family and my friends. The People Crew, Pierre, Justin, Gabe and Corey.  The Hill St Crew, The  Bellingham boys. All the photographers who are working for it.  All of the mags, and everyone and anyone who has helped me along the way. Also a big thanks to everyone who has made snowboarding what it is today, and to the consumer who buys the products.
