Victorian Alps, Australia - Up to 30cms of snow has fallen at Hotham and Dinner Plain , as a massive pre-season blizzard has inundated the ski resort in dry, light powder.
The snow started at about 9am on Sunday morning and did not let up for almost the entire day, with snowfalls particularly heavy in the afternoon. Mid-winter conditions saw temperatures quickly plummet down to -4.3C by about 3pm yesterday, with some reports indicating snow had fallen at altitudes as low as 1000 metres.
Resort visitors are enjoying the winter wonderland today with toboggans, snow ball fights and general snow play throughout the village. Some snow drift areas are waist deep as the entire village has been more than just covered – it has been buried.
The latest snow fall has also not only brought quantity but quality. The type of snow that has fallen at Hotham is the stuff that skiers’ dreams are made of, being extremely light and fluffy powder snow.
The cold snap is expected to stay at Hotham throughout Monday, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting snow showers to continue today. The current temperature has dropped even further and is officially at -4.7C.
When combined with the 20cms snowfall of two weeks ago, the snow flurries at Easter time and 7cms of snow a month ago, rarely has a pre-season been as spectacular.
Come on up and experience it for yourself - you would literally think that you are visiting the resort in mid-August rather than early May!
