First snow of the season at Mt Buller
Over 10cm (4 inches) of snow has fallen at Mt Buller overnight and continues to fall today, ushering in the start of the 2008 winter season.
“While Mt Buller officially opened over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, this is the first natural snow fall that we’ve received in the last week and the resort is abuzz with excitement,” said Phil Nunn, CEO of the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board. “With more snow falls forecast for the next few days and predictions of a really cold winter ahead, it’s shaping up to be a great season.”
After receiving a number of pre-season snow falls in May and a run of cold temperatures in the lead up to the resort opening, Mt Buller has laid down a cold base that should ensure current snow falls hold.
“Mt Buller is covered in a blanket of snow that is ideal for anyone looking to come have some winter fun by making a snowman, having a snowball fight or experiencing the downhill thrills of tobogganing on our new and improved Village toboggan run,” said Nunn. “Furthermore, our new high-speed Holden Express chairlift, the first six-seater in Australia, is currently operating free of charge, allowing sightseers to take advantage of the true Mt Buller winter experience.”
With snow on the ground, Mt Buller is eagerly anticipating the time when it can open its lifts for skiing and snowboarding as well as sightseeing. Buller Ski Lifts is currently snow making on the resort’s most popular runs and will be assessing snow conditions and subsequent lift operations on a daily basis.
“We have received some good snowfalls with further snowfalls forecast,” said Laurie Blampied, General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts. “In anticipation of more snow and suitable snowmaking conditions we are preparing some lifts for operation, possibly for this weekend.”
