Heavenly Is Pounded With Eight Feet Of New Snow In Four Days
South Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev - Heavenly Mountain Resort has finally emerged from an epic winter storm that left in its wake over eight feet of new snow, buried cars and too many perma-grins to count. The storm went out with a bang, dropping as much as four feet after the resort closed Monday night.
This is the type of storm the Sierra Nevada is famous for, where snowfall is measured in feet rather than inches.
“We’ve got a ton of snow up here,” said Heavenly’s director of ski patrol, Mark McAllister. “All the glades are open and skiing is awesome – the best of the year.”
The snow started to fall Thursday morning and continued through Tuesday morning. Resort crews had to scramble this morning to dig out lifts and perform avalanche control before the resort opened at 9am. Road crews have done a tremendous job of keeping the roads clear, and after a brief closure last night, Highway 50 has been open all day.
Heavenly is expecting up to another foot of snow on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning before the storm breaks revealing the bluebird skies and amazing Lake views that Heavenly is known for. This storm sets Heavenly up for the months of March and April, when Heavenly celebrates its Spring Loaded festival, which includes the South Shore Soldiers Ski and Snowboard Camp, The Gunbarrel 25 hosted by Glen Plake, the TransWorld SNOWboarding Team Challenge, the Pond Skimming Championship of Tahoe, and parties, pub crawls, nightlife and shows too numerous to mention!
