Every year for the West Coast Invitational the weather has been nothing but perfect warm sunny skies only expected for Mammoth in May. This year however it was the exact opposite. A heavy wet, windy system pushed it way into the sierras created some nasty weather postponing the fiesta de la pipa to Saturday morning followed by the village rail jam that night.
Luke Mitrani and Greg Bretz were really the only two riders that stood out through the fog and slow conditions. Luke was able to link some tricks to together and with out question was voted 6,000 dollars richers followed by Greg taking home 3,000 bucks. Elana Height and Mercedes Nicoll split 1,000 for the girls seeing as they were the only two ladies in the tube that day.
As the sun went down the rain started up again while people started to swarm into the village for the rail jam. This year was the most mellow set-up the West Coast Invitational has put together with a new additional of a curve rail, down bair with a harsh donkey and a kinked box. Some of the stand-outs were Lucas Magoon, Forrest Bailey, Johnny Lazz, Tyler Flannagan, Mike Cassanova, Trevor Jacobs, and many more. In the end it was Dan Brisse with the much-deserved win, stacking the cheddar cutting up 10,000 big ones. After all the awards were a finished up the village gondola shuttled everyone 21 and over up to Canyon lodge for the after party. Dilated People held down the stage for yet another WCI rap show. The drinks started flowing and the party got loose. Despite the weather everyone made the most out of the contest making it another successful West Coast Invitational here in Mammoth. Thanks to everyone that had a part in putting the contest on, and everyone that bought me a drink up at the bar.
