Memorial Weekend is Last Chance to Ride Snowbird

Event info from John Centi 5/25/2006

SNOWBIRD, UTAH – Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, will signal the close of resort skiing in Utah with the last day of skiing and riding at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort. Utah’s only resort still open for skiing and riding, Snowbird will run the lifts for the final weekend of spring skiing, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 27-29.

“Thanks to significant snowfall between November and April Snowbird was able to withstand the rise in temperatures and lack of snow in May to offer skiing and riding through Memorial Day,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “We’re looking forward to carrying that momentum into next season when Snowbird will be home to a new high-speed quad and a 600-foot tunnel between Peruvian Gulch and Mineral Basin.”

The 2005-06 season was a successful one for Snowbird, marked by 177 days of lift operations, a 142-inch March and a season snowfall total of 586 inches, exceeding the annual average of 500 inches.
Snowbird will be open for skiing and riding Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 27-29, and lift tickets are $35/day. Little Cloud chairlift, accessing Little Cloud Bowl and Regulator Johnson, will operate from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Mineral Basin Express chairlift will be open from 8 a.m. to noon.
Snowbird’s late-season skiing and snowboarding is not for beginners. Only advanced terrain is available from the Little Cloud and Mineral Basin Express chairlifts.
The 2006-07 season will bring a new high-speed quad in Peruvian Gulch and a 600-foot tunnel between Peruvian Gulch and Mineral Basin. Snowbird’s original Peruvian chairlift is in the process of being removed and construction on the new high-speed quad is scheduled to begin in early June. The tunnel, complete with a conveyor lift, will provide access to Mineral Basin from the top of the new chairlift. The expected completion date of the project is fall of 2006.
Summer activities at Snowbird include an Alpine Slide, ZipRider, Bungy Trampoline, horseback and ATV tours in Mineral Basin, hiking, biking, scooter riding, outdoor dining, shopping, concerts and festivals. Scenic Aerial Tram rides to Hidden Peak are scheduled to begin in early June and other summer activities will begin when conditions permit.
