Methven, New Zealand - Canterbury's Mt Hutt ski area is on track to open this Saturday, June 10 following an icy blast that dumped 15 centimetres of fresh snow on the slopes, and the induction of 120 new staff over Queens Birthday weekend.
Ski area manager David Wilson says the recent snowfalls, staff intake and excellent snowmaking conditions means that Mt Hutt is raring to kick off the 2006 season.
“It’s looking like the best start to the season for the past six years and depending on this week’s weather conditions, we’re gearing up to open from the top of the mountain.
“The mountain is sparkling white, staff training is well underway and we’re looking forward to snowmaking over the next few days in the lead up to opening. Methven is buzzing with the arrival of skiers and boarders - everyone’s looking forward to a great season.”
In keeping with tradition, Mt Hutt’s opening will celebrated with bubbles served courtesy of Lindauer, and the first people on the quad and Summit Six chairlifts receiving the coveted ‘First on the Chair 2006’ T-shirts.
“Conditions are shaping up well and combined with last year’s massive infrastructural development Mt Hutt is set to offer an awesome winter experience,” says Mr Wilson.
Significant investment in the ski area last year means skiers and riders enjoy rapid base to summit access via the Summit Six, a six-seater high speed chairlift which also offers access to new trails and off piste areas.
Other improvements last season included the relocation of the quad chair to provide a dedicated novice area complete with a perfectly graded 1.2km novice trail and a new magic carpet providing easy access to the slopes for beginners.
