NZ Snowboard Championships Day 3:Halfpipe
Queenstown, New Zealand - Day three of the National Snowboarding Championships finally got the start it deserved, clear skies moderate winds. Three days of wind and rain had taken its toll on mountain and competitor alike and so it was with some apprehension that everyone headed up the hill to checkout what sort of condition the halfpipe would be in. Given onslaught of the previous few days one could have been forgiven for expecting the halfpipe to be more of a quarter pipe but the efforts of the Remarks Parklife and Grooming crews resulted in a pipe that look superb given the conditions leading up to the day.
With a truly international field in attendance, including Xavier Hoffmann from Germany, the Kiwi male entrants were faced with an uphill battle from the first drop-in. As expected Hoffman and fellow compatriot Philipp Strauss led the men’s with and impressive string of moves, including a f/s 720 to cab 720 backed up with solid landings and smooth transitions.
Juliane Bray lead the women’s field with an impressive mix of FS switch 540s, Rie Yoshiyawa from Japan come second with Fiona Duncan NZL a close third.
