Snow Still Falling in Ski Town, U.S.A®, Forecast Calls for Up To A Foot More

Steamboat Springs, CO — Friday the 13th proved lucky forSteamboat as a winter storm moved into the area last night dropping 6 inches of early season snow at Thunderhead, the resort’s mid-mountain location at 9,080 feet. Snow covered the entire town of Steamboat with lower elevations receiving 1-2 inches, turning Ski Town, U.S.A® into a Winter Wonderland.

“Snow is something we’re used to here in Steamboat. The past two seasons have seen more than 400 inches of snow accumulate. This is just another in a series of storms that started in early October and is an early season reminder of what’s to come.” says Andy Wirth, vice president of marketing and sales for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. “The snow will be here all season, but the incredible early season deals we’re offering won’t be around much longer. So the snow is a great push for our guests to book their winter vacation now.”

Snow continues to fall and blank and the forecast is calling for continued snow throughout the weekend with up to a foot of accumulation at higher elevations on top of Mt. Werner. Conditions are expected to clear up early next week, but cold temperatures will remain in the area.

The below 32 degree temperatures and boost of moisture in the air created the perfect mix for Steamboat’s snowmaking crews to jump back into action and fire up the snowmaking fleet to add to the natural snow base. Snowmaking began at the resort on Sunday, October 22nd and the guns will continue to build a snow foundation 24-hours a day as weather conditions permit, preparing for the resort’s Opening Day.

The 2009/2010 winter season begins at Steamboat on November 25th with the annual Scholarship Day, where proceeds from specially priced lift tickets benefit the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Scholarship Fund. To prepare for this season, Steamboat infused nearly $2.5 million in on-mountain and base area improvements including a new Kids’ Vacation Center, Ski and Snowboard School Ticket Office and new base area Patrol facility. In addition, One Steamboat Place will open this season featuring a heated, expanded base area with easy access to Gondola Square, as well as new retail outlets in the plaza. Wildhorse Gondola is quickly moving along with towers installed from Trailhead Lodge into the new base area plaza. The gondola is expected to open in February 2010.
