June Mountain

June Mountain in California | June Mountain is so low-key and so quality that if Eastern Sierra snowboarders were able to guard secret spots the way surfers do, you’d never, ever hear about it. Alas, in snowboarding one way to get a good park better is to have more people, not less, ride it. Thankfully the progression leading up to top park ranking has taken place at June as organically as the dark roast at the Looney Bean (which happens to be the key to making the 20-minute drive from Mammoth to June). Not only has June risen to the top of preferred North American resorts but it’s staying there while holding onto that small-resort radness that sets it apart from “the other one” on this side of the 395. June finds ammo where others might not. Take, for example, the newest weapon in its arsenal - one of the world’s first hip cutters (the other is at Boreal and both are new for the 2009/10 season). Fifteen feet and with adjustable angles, there’s a hip line and quarterpipes in June’s near future. Like any good secret spot, it takes effort to get to June. One of my friends timed it once. It was something like 33 minutes and 3 chairlifts from parking lot to the “top” before back-boot even touched binding. Ps. June Mountain on powder days. Words can’t explain.

June Mountain is so sick. They have the best halfpipe and the best terrain park. Its always so mellow over there and the people are all pretty chill. Grenade used to be based out of June at the gas station and those guys ruled it.
